Elocution – An Old Art Form in a Modern Era

Elocution isn’t a word we hear much these days, but lessons in the art of speech,  commonly referred to as elocution lessons, were particularly popular in Australia during the late 19th century and well into the mid-20th century.

Historically, elocution focused on voice modulation, clear diction, and learning to speak with poise and precision. Students were often taught to imitate British Received Pronunciation (RP), producing what some called speaking “with a plum in the mouth.” In those days, the emphasis was on a “proper” way to speak, often tied to class and social status. You can see the traditional definition of elocution here.

By the 1950s and 60s, as Australian culture grew more distinct and less influenced by British standards, the popularity of elocution classes declined.

Why Are Elocution Lessons Popular Again?

In recent years, Australians have shown renewed interest in improving their speech and communication skills. Several modern factors have contributed to this resurgence:

  • The Shift to Virtual Communication
The Covid pandemic heightened awareness of verbal communication, leading to a resurgence in speech and elocution training. With video calls replacing face-to-face meetings, many professionals became more aware of poor articulation, unclear speech, or nervous delivery. On platforms like Zoom and Microsoft Teams, where meetings are often recorded, clear and confident speaking is essential.
  • Remote and Hybrid Working
Remote working has made clear communication skills more important than ever. Professionals want to speak with polish and confidence during online meetings, and elocution coaching helps them deliver ideas assertively and with impact.
  • Language and Accent Differences
In global and multicultural teams, accents and varied speech patterns can make communication difficult. Elocution training helps people refine their pronunciation or neutralise strong accents so they can be understood by a wider audience.
  • Social Media and Personal Branding
On YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram, strong communication skills help content creators stand out. A clear, engaging voice is just as important as visual presentation when building a personal brand online.
  • Public Speaking Opportunities
From podcasts and webinars to conferences and corporate presentations, public speaking skills are in high demand. Polished and confident speech helps presenters connect with audiences and leave a lasting impression.
  • Confidence Building
For many, elocution training isn’t just about speech clarity, it’s about boosting confidence in both social and professional settings.
  • Education and Student Development
Schools and universities increasingly require students to present their ideas to groups. Learning effective communication skills early builds confidence for life.

How Have Elocution Lessons Changed?

Today’s modern elocution lessons are less about overly precise diction and more about developing strong oral communication skills. The focus is on becoming a confident, engaging speaker, not producing exaggerated speech sounds.

Modern training blends elements of elocution with public speaking coaching, presentation skills, and voice development. At The Occasional Speaker, we call this a “Speech Makeover” or a “Speech Workout”.  The focus is on practical, fun, and results-driven coaching.

Mastering the art of speech takes practice, but it’s rewarding, enjoyable, and can transform the way others perceive you.
