Celebrating International Day of the Tongue Twister

November 8 is an exciting day for Speech Teachers everywhere.

Yes!  Speech teachers have used tongue twister to demonstrate the correct articulation of various speech sounds and to correct speech faults and defects.

Performers use Tongue Twisters to warm up perform a performance and. of course, they’re just good fun.

So, November 9 is International Day of the Tongue Twister which falls every year on the 2nd Sunday in November.

Tongue Twister Day encourages you to twist your tongue into knots as you challenge your friends to the most convoluted and difficult tongue twisters.

Tongue twisters have entertained us throughout history and many of them are connected to stories from a by-gone era.

Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers
Did Peter Piper pick a peck of pickled peppers?
If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers,
Where’s the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?

Did you know that Peter was actually a real person?  Pierre Poivre (Peter) was a French horticulturist who, during the mid-1700’s, established a reputation for his knowledge and taste for all things spicy. Pierre had only one arm and so picking peppers was probably quite a challenge.

But enough about Peter.  I’ll save his story of the 14 November when we again gather to celebrate, with relish, yet another special day: International Day of the Pickle.  (Yes! I’m sure you’ll agree, that day too, is an important event and worth celebrating.

For the moment though, let’s focus on International Day of the Tongue Twister.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the most difficult of all tongue twisters is:

The sixth sick sheikh’s sixth sheep’s sick.

However, I’ve another one that’s particularly difficult to say but worth mastering.

A word of warning: It’s best to master this one yourself before trying it out on the kids.

I slit the sheet, the sheet I slit, and on the slitted sheet I sit.

How to Celebrate Tongue Twister Day

Choosing how to celebrate this important day is easy. It’s the day we devote to challenging friends to a tongue workout.  Issue a challenge to friends and family and enjoy the day to practicing, reciting, and sharing your favourite tongue twisters.
